I'll be making a point of creating new ones with every blog post, so if there's a size you're looking for, let me know! I've had some requests for VOX-style banners as well. I'll be getting to those soon. (Gotta build me a template...)
Today's Comic: So Now What?

A part of Hawaii's charm is the simplicity of the people, the culture, the foods. Things we've grown up with are often-times questionable to the outside world - like "hurricane popcorn" (buttered popcorn with kakimochi/arare and furikake) or spam musubi. It's our cultural phenomenon - our way of making a mark on the map.
Perhaps these things have stayed the same, but a lot of places and things I remember doing when I was younger, just aren't the same.
Just the other day, I found out that Island Manapua (think local dimsum takeout with chinese plate lunch cafeteria lineup) closed. As a child, I'd go with my grandparents to pick up a Char Siu Bao with extra chopped up char siu and roast duck, mochi cakes, and chow funn. It was one of my favorites as the older Chinese ladies behind the counter would give me a small sample of the freshly chopped meats. It was always fun to watch the men open up the huge steamer vats to retrieve a couple buns and pork hash.
To think they're finally gone, without much fanfare or even a goodbye, is sad.
Just in the past couple months, a few more places shut down for good:
- Ebisu Catering/Okazuya - known for their simple menus and Okinawan potato tempura
- Hawaii's 2 TGIFridays locations - not the best food, but a lot of good memories are housed there from my high school days
- A Chinese fruit and nut candy shop closed in Chinatown
- The first U.S. location of Jackie's Kitchen just closed TODAY without warning!
- Magoo's Pizza closed on Friday. One less pizza place on the island!
